GREENWAVE NAVIGATOR

Revolutionizing Sustainable Urban Planning with XR

GreenWave Navigator is a pioneering tool for sustainable maritime travel, helping shipowners and operators reduce emissions by optimizing routes based on environmental data. Designed with both ecology and efficiency in mind, it guides vessels through ocean paths that minimize fuel use and carbon impact.

Backed by real-time oceanographic datasets from EMODnet, the tool empowers users to make greener navigation choices — from large ships to smaller recreational craft.

Did you know?

Maritime transport accounts for 13% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. And while cargo vessels are a known source, even small craft — like yachts and motorboats — contribute disproportionately high emissions per passenger.GreenWave Navigator tackles this challenge by enabling vessels to avoid carbon-intensive areas, saving fuel and protecting marine ecosystems along the way.⚓ A motorboat emits up to 364g CO₂ per passenger-km — far more than a passenger ferry.

How it Works

At its core, GreenWave Navigator uses a Breadth-First Search (BFS) pathfinding algorithm. This method maps the ocean into a grid and finds the optimal, low-impact route by evaluating environmental variables like:

Marine traffic patterns
Emissions hotspots
Weather and wave conditions

The system filters out "obstacle" areas (high-emission zones or ecological risk zones), guiding the vessel along the most sustainable course.

Currently in MVP stage, the tool has demonstrated how ecological data can actively reshape the way vessels navigate oceans.

Grid-based ocean routing
BFS-driven low-emission navigation
EMODnet data integration
Real-time path optimization

Sustainable Development Goals

Target 13.2
- “Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.”

- By reducing emissions and encouraging eco-friendly routing, GreenWave helps minimize pollution (air and potential spills) that harms marine ecosystems.
Target 14.1
Reduce the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by half.
- “By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”

- Promotes responsible navigation aligned with international efforts to protect marine biodiversity and comply with maritime sustainability frameworks.
Target 11.6
- “By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality...”
- Shipping emissions contribute to poor air quality in coastal cities. GreenWave helps reduce this impact through optimized routing.
Target 9.4
- “By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.”
- Reduces fuel consumption in shipping, promoting more efficient use of fossil fuels and lowering operational waste.
Target 12.2
- “By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources.”
- Reduces fuel consumption in shipping, promoting more efficient use of fossil fuels and lowering operational waste.
